Blue Gum Country Estate

Blue Gum Country Estate Tea

Do you ever feel like you need a break from it all? Perhaps you long for a holiday in the countryside where the air is clean, there’s no noise and you are surrounded by scenic views? Contrary to popular belief, Winter is the ideal time to drive out of Cape Town and spoil yourself (and your family) with a well-deserved holiday. Especially, when there are so many special offers to take advantage of. My sister and I visited Blue Gum country estate to immerse ourselves in the land and scenery of the countryside, and enjoy what the Stanford has to offer.

It was magical and peaceful.

Named after the 140-year old Blue Gum tree that grows on the front lawn, the family-run estate offers visitors a unique and personalized experience in the countryside. Its a mere 2-hour drive from Cape Town or 30-minute drive from Hermanus. Blue Gum country estate is the perfect place to explore the Cape Whale Coast area whilst enjoying a countryside setting as your base. Its situated between Stanford and Riviersonderend.

Upon arrival, the owner Anton de Kock welcomed us and helped with our luggage to the mountain view cottage. A warm and inviting English country style cottage awaited us, right beside the mountain. There are 5 mountain view cottages, each with its own entrance. Our cottage had two bedrooms, a lounge, an open porch, fireplace, bathroom, kitchenette, and braai area. This cottage could fit a family of four comfortably.

After settling in and taking a few pictures, we went down to the main reception area for afternoon tea. A serving of scrumptious homemade scones and croissants awaited us, with tea and coffee. The scones tasted like my Moms, warm, light and delicious! Due to a small renovation, we were seated in the restaurant for afternoon tea. This beautiful dining area is usually where afternoon tea is served.

My sister and I jumped out of bed to capture the sunrise the next morning, unfortunately, we were too late. That could be a result of the comfortable bed or the absence of my alarm clock sounding. Which I would highly recommend you do, put your alarm clock off and allow the birds to wake you up. There are hundreds of birds on the estate, in all shapes, sizes, and colours. You can see them from your cottage, the main reception area or anywhere on the estate.

After a refreshing drink, we were off on a 40-minute hiking trail. The start of the trail was a few meters from our cottage and we could see traces of springbok and other animals. I would highly recommend the hiking/walking trail as you get a picturesque view of Blue Gum country estate, which is even more beautiful from the top. The area is surrounded by green pastures, proteas, and farmland, its clean, tranquil and scenic. I actually don’t think the pictures do it justice. Thereafter we were off to freshen up before breakfast. Get excited Capetonians, Blue Gum country estate has no water restrictions! So, you are allowed to take a long bath or shower for more than 2 minutes.

Blue Gum country estate is ideal for the family, honeymoon couples, solo travelers and is especially kid-friendly. There are many activities on the estate to keep everyone occupied (tennis court, swimming pool, play area etc.). The play area also has big 2 trampolines, perfect for kids or adults. Speaking of activities, there are plenty of things to do within the Stanford area. The small town is filled with restaurants, art galleries, and boutique-style stores. Stanford also has a well-known wine route, which offers a variety of wines. They’ve diversified to add craft beers, gin, and grappa-based liqueurs. Many of the wine estates have restaurants and picnic facilities with an open countryside view.

Breakfast at Blue Gum Country Estate

Come hungry! The breakfast table is filled with cereal, yogurt, croissants, health bread, locally made cheese, fresh fruits and so much more. The cheese platter and muesli pie was my absolute favourite! In addition, you can also indulge in a full English breakfast at no extra cost. I have to applaud the excellent and personalized service from the staff, especially from Anton and the waitrons. They really went out of their way to make us feel at home.
