It’s the first week of January, usually the time when everyone talks about New Year’s Resolutions. According to Forbes, one of the most common New Year’s Resolutions is giving back to charity and doing more volunteer work.

If you follow me on social media, you would have seen my involvement with the Santa Shoebox project, one of South Africa’s most loved children’s charities. This project has grown in leaps and bounds since it began in 2006, giving away a total of 958 835 Santa Shoeboxes to date. The shoeboxes are distributed to more than 1000 recipient facilities each year, through more than 60 satellites around South Africa and Namibia. In December, MySchool invited us to distribute Santa Shoeboxes and spread the festive cheer. The kids each received a beautifully wrapped box with a card. Each box was filled with new, unused and age-appropriate items:

  • Two Book Dash books
  • A toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Soap
  • A wash-cloth
  • Sweets
  • Toys
  • School supplies
  • An outfit of clothing

MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet has partnered with Book Dash and the Santa Shoebox Project to ignite a love of reading through book ownership. Book Dash, a registered non-profit organisation, has an innovative model to create and share new, quality South African children’s books that are highly affordable and relatable.

“Education is a high priority for many of our MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet supporters, and low levels of literacy is one of the country’s greatest challenges,”says Trish Kowo, MySchool’s Marketing Manager.  “This year we looked for a high impact project to support, and we are delighted to partner with the Santa Shoebox Project and Book Dash to bring the joys, fun and benefits of reading into the homes of 50 000 young children.”

I choose to publish this blog post in January as I do not believe that we should only give back in December. Programs like the Santa Shoebox and MySchool need your help throughout the year. There are two ways in which you can help, by donating a virtual Santa Shoebox or making a financial donation.

To become a supporter, sign up for free as a MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet cardholder at or download the App.  You can select up to three causes that matter to you. Every time you swipe your card at a participating retailer, a donation is made to your beneficiaries on your behalf, at no cost to you.
