Open Streets Cape Town
On the 18th January 2015, Bree Street in Cape Town was transformed into a car free zone. “Open Streets Cape Town is a platform that connects communities through healthy recreation, creative expression, local economic activity and alternative forms of transport”.
I particularly enjoyed walking down the streets, connecting with people and enjoying the view. You start noticing the beautiful buildings and the amazing view. This event was similar to a festival, but the vibe is really chilled, which is perfect for a Sunday. Entrance is free and you are given the opportunity to explore Bree Street without using a car (Cool, right). Of course, this is a green initiative which is great for the environment. The whole family can enjoy a day out, exploring the street and watching (or part-taking) all the different activities.
Some of the activities included handball, belly dance performances by Hip Fusion, capoeira, ultimate frisbee, a performance by Cape Town Opera, acroyoga, street art, rollerblading, skateboarding, a bicycle treasure hunt, salsa, pole dancing, tango and other dance, a #prayfornigeria silent display of solidarity, live grafitti display, busking, photo scavenger hunt, a ‘shout out corner’, a pop-up lounge and many more.
I will never look at Bree Street in the same way again.
