The Flying Pan
Forget cooking, meal prep, or going to the grocery store! The Flying Pan is a delivery company that brings delicious and quality meals straight to your door.
We live in an era of constant dinner innovation. As an avid foodie and gastronome, I thoroughly miss the experience of trying new dishes at restaurants. Since the beginning of lockdown, I’ve been cooking every single day. Although I love being in the kitchen, there are many times when my workload becomes unbearable and I do not have time to cook. Or I want the convenience of a home-cooked meal without the effort.
I was overjoyed when I discovered The Flying Pan! A Cape Town based catering company dedicated to food that is fresh, vibrant, and high quality. They combine a straightforward approach with a creative flair to create delicious dishes and memorable food experiences.
The Flying Pan asked me to review the services for a week. Here are my thoughts.
The Flying Pan: Menu
The Flying Plan offers 3 menus: classic, vegetarian, and low carb. I wanted to taste a variety of dishes, so I opted for one vegetarian dish, one low carb dish and three items from the classic menu.
Classic menu: The everyday solution for healthy, delicious and convenient dinners and features dishes carefully curated for their variety, flavour and balanced nutrition. Developed by an in-house chef, the classic menu draws inspiration from both local and international cuisines, dedicated to seasonality.
Vegetarian and Vegan menu: The Flying Pan has now added a vegan menu to its portfolio. A diverse range of plant-based proteins & grains, ensuring that the dietary requirements of vegetarian clients are well taken care of. All vegetarian meals are made from scratch in the kitchen, using fresh ingredients that ensure superior flavour and nutrition.
Low carb menu: Tailored to those following a low carb lifestyle, carbohydrates are restricted and are replaced by non-starchy vegetables and low carb alternatives.
Chickpea Tikka Masala (vegetarian)
Chickpea tikka masala served with red hot potatoes and butter roti, topped with fresh coriander.
Spaghetti & Meatballs
Classic spaghetti and beef meatballs with a spicy tomato sauce topped with fresh basil and grated parmesan.
Jerk Chicken Jambalaya
Jerk chicken and chorizo jambalaya, made with coconut rice, spicy jambalaya sauce, feta, spring onions and basil. A traditional Jamaican dish.
Pulled Mexican Beef
Pulled Mexican beef, served with a potato, butternut and spinach puree, topped with a a fennel slaw and pickled jalapenos.
Bacon & Onion Quiche (low carb)
Bacon, caramelized onion and mature cheddar quiche served with roasted seasonal vegetables.
Each dish was as vibrant as the last! My ultimate favourite dish was the spaghetti and beef meatballs.
What I love most about The Flying Pan
Not to sound cliché, but every meal was damn good! The meals were relatively healthy and not complicated. Very often, I find simple meals to be more flavourful, as it allows the quality ingredients to shine through. After collecting my order, I heated it for about 2 – 3 minutes. At first, I thought I could finish the whole meal, but the portion was large, and I decided to save some for the next day.
Apart from saving time and electricity, another benefit of The Flying Pan is less cleaning. My kitchen remained clean that week with minimal effort. Giving me more time to focus on my loved ones and work outputs.
The Price and Size
The average cost of a meal is R90, which includes delivery. Compared to the food I usually order via MrD, UberEats and other websites, I think it’s well worth it.
As mentioned previously, the portion size of the meal is large. Every day (except Tuesday when I enjoyed the spaghetti & meatballs) I still had leftover food I could use the next day or freeze.
Considering the COVID-19 virus, what precautions is The Flying Plan taking to protect consumers?
In addition to the regulations that govern safe workplace practices (social distancing and dedicated workstations, masks, regular sanitizing, checking staff for symptoms), they’ve put measures in place that are more specific to their business. These include bagging meals to minimize contact with the packaging during transit, strict protocols for drivers in terms of sanitizing before and after each delivery and the daily sanitization of the delivery bikes and boxes.
How to place an order.
Visit https://theflyingpan.co.za/ to place your order. Select your meals by clicking the ‘add to cart’ button, proceed to checkout, and complete your order by making payment. If you prefer not to order using our website, email firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance.
How does the delivery system work?
The Flying Plan reduced their delivery days to only twice a week (i.e. Monday and Tuesday meals delivered on Mondays, Wednesday and Thursday meals delivered on Wednesdays). They have only just recently added Friday deliveries. This was done to reduce contact and improve safety for drivers and customers.
Can we provide The Flying Plan with reusable containers to deliver our meals in?
Yes! Just email The Flying Pan to organise.
Is there a cut-off time for orders and deliveries during lockdown?
They extended our cutoff time over lockdown – a feature that will remain. The order cutoff time for the following week’s delivery is Friday 12 pm.
What is the minimum amount of meals to order and how much does delivery cost?
Good news! There is no minimum number of dishes to order, its completely flexible. There is however a benefit to ordering for 4 weeks’ worth of meals in advance (either Monday to Thursday or Monday to Friday) in that you get 10% off your entire order. Delivery is included in the price
