UCT Women in Business High Tea

I attended the UCT women in business High Tea at the Vineyard Hotel in Claremont, with special guest-speaker,  Suzanne Ackerman-Berman.  We were a group of about 30 ladies, all eager to hear about Suzanne’s personal story and insights on women in business.

Meeting Suzanne at the UCT Women in Business High Tea, I was immediately drawn to her humble yet powerful nature. It is evident that she has a passion for food, innovation and development for small businesses. She is also extremely passionate about South Africa. Suzanne, spoke openly about her career development at Pick ‘n Pay. She mentioned how eager she was to learn about the business at a young age. “I started off as a trainee and worked in every area of the business for over 3 years. When I was promoted to become a buyer, I was one of the only female buyers and had two young kids at the time”. She had to challenge the gender stereotypes and make her voice/opinion heard. Suzanne says one of the first things she learnt was that she cannot change the behaviour of men but she could only change herself.

Suzanne encouraged the attendees at the UCT Women in Business High Tea to discover their passion, use it to help people and make a difference in South Africa. She also emphasized that women have a key role in changing the country with passion, grace, heart and compassion.

Suzanne mentioned a few key points:

  • Understand your role as women in business and mothers
  • Do not judge others, especially other women
  • Understand what you can and can’t control
  • Let go of the things you cannot change
  • Be who you want to be
  • Use your power in a positive way
  • Use your vital skills to transform South Africa
  • Allow your instinct/gut to guide you
  • When you see something profoundly wrong, speak up!

I enjoyed attending the UCT Women in Business High Tea because the group was much smaller and more intimate. We were fortunate to network with all the ladies who attended the event.

Another great initiative by UCT GSB, helping to empower women!

Love and light,

Megan
